Here are some quick tips for working in the heat and preventing heat related illnesses or injuries.

• Drink lots of water/fluids and drink them often. Attempt to rehydrate every hour
• If working outside work in the shade when and where possible
• Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect your self from UV rays and sunburn
• Avoid strenuous work if possible. If not avoid it for long periods of time
• Take rest breaks when needed

Downtown Owen Sound’s 22nd Annual Hottest Yard Sale Under the Sun takes place on Saturday July 3rd from 8am to 4pm.   This year, we worked with friends at the Georgian Bay Folk Society to bring the Summerfolk Stage and the Cafe of the Senses to the Hottest Yard Sale Under the Sun. The end result is a great music line up on the new “Downtown Summerfolk Stage” (9th Street at 2nd Avenue East). Recently announced, this line up includes the Summerfolk Discoveries  Showcase (Jill Jambor, Ben Turcotte, and Anne & David Beverly-Foster), the Bearcats, Larry Jensen & Rob McLean, Brothers the Band, Bobby Dean Blackburn, and the Tommy Gilham Band.

On July 1,st the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) comes into effect in Ontario.

Starting September 1st First Nations status card holders will be exempt from the provincial part of the HST for eligible off-reserve purchases.  For July and August, status card holders will be refunded the provincial part of the HST.

Starting June 25th 2010, preparations for the reconstruction of the 9th Street Bridge and the connecting streets in the immediate area of the bridge on each side of the river will commence. The limits of construction are from 2nd Avenue West to 1st Avenue East on 9th Street including the intersection of 1st Avenue West at 9th Street West.

“It is difficult with precision to ascertain where or when the initial Owen Sound Farmers’ Market (OSFM) began. There exists a number of references in the early history of Owen Sound to a “Market Square”. One of these was at the site of Boyds Wharf, (where the current Bayshore Arena is sited) and another was beside the courthouse (current old courthouse). Yet another places the market in its current location prior to any building for its specific use.”
