Streets Alive! returns to Downtown Owen Sound August 13th and 14th

Media Release August 12, 2010 (City of Owen Sound)

As announced and coordinated by a voluntary, ad hoc planning committee, Streets Alive! is returning to Downtown Owen Sound August 13th and 14th. The 2nd annual Busker Festival will showcase a wide variety of local area and visiting grassroots performers as well as seasoned veterans.

The festival takes place throughout downtown and in the 800 block of 1st Avenue West.

Buskers are a unique breed of street performers bringing their talent and art form directly to the community. They can encompass everything from musicians, magicians and dancers to mimes, jugglers and storytellers. Performers depend on the generosity of the public by soliciting tips for their unpaid performances.

Busking festivals have been gaining popularity within the last few years even though this tradition dates back several hundred years. Streets Alive! provides an opportunity for emerging artists to perform before an audience, experienced artists to increase their audience base and the general public to experience new and unique art forms.

Friday night’s event will be a preview of Saturday’s artists and will take place at Owen Sound’s City Hall Plaza from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. This year’s performers will be Piyak Ootihi Drummers and Singers, Anne & David Beverly-Foster; Becky Thorne, Twirlin’ Diva & Rajasi, Bob Robinson, Dave Houston, Jasmine Moon Dancers and Neil Morley. Admission is free. Bring your lawn chair.

Saturday’s schedule runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in various key locations in the downtown core. Buskers will include children’s entertainment, musicians, jugglers, dancers, visual artists and much more.

There are a few volunteer opportunities left – please contact me for details. Great for high school students. Registered volunteers who work a minimum of 4 hours will be welcome to join the buskers for their free evening meal at the market building, starting at 6 pm.

Also this weekend – Chalk a Block on Sunday in Market Square, from 12 to 4 pm. Grab some chalk, stake out your spot and get drawing. Chalk provided and barbequed edibles will be available by donation. See Councillor Pink for details.

Hope to see you there!
