bayshore-broadcastingMarch 1, 1940, the World is gripped in the clutches of World War II, Canada was preparing for an election and the among the headlines of the day in the Owen Sound Sun Times this one stood out “CFOS Officially on Air with Friday Program; Reception is Very Clear.”

At 8:00 a.m., from a makeshift studio in downtown Owen Sound, radio listeners in Grey and Bruce Counties were greeted with ” Good morning, I’m Norman Child and you’re listening to the voice of Grey and Bruce.” Owen Sound had come of age.

CFOS was the vision of Howard Fleming, publisher of the local daily newspaper, the Owen Sound Sun Times. CFOS gave him another method of delivering news, information and entertainment to residents in Grey and Bruce as well as providing local business a new and exciting advertising vehicle.

In 1984 CFOS was sold to Doug Caldwell who established the Bayshore Broadcasting Corporation. Ross Kentner, a member of the CFOS team since 1961was named General Manager.

Bayshore Broadcasting received approval in 1987 for a 100,000 watt FM station. Mix 106 soon became the dominant Radio Station catering to the Adult Contemporary format.

A second building makeover came in 2001 with the addition of Country 93 to the Bayshore Broadcasting family. The new service quickly carved out a large regional audience, an audience starved for their own Country music station.

Bayshore Broadcasting has continued to grow its business and has launched a 3 station brand. 98 the Beach was launched in Port Elgin to serve the Bruce County shoreline. 977 the Beach serves the Collingwood-Wasaga market and 104.9 the Beach serves Goderich and the Huron County Shoreline.

Norm Child had it right in 1940…70 years later Bayshore remains “the voice of Grey and Bruce” plus Wasaga-Collingwood and Huron County.
